What Makes a Vehicle Qualify for the EV Grant?

Not all electric vehicles are eligible for government grants. Here's exactly what makes a new car qualify:

Technical Requirements (All Vehicles Must Meet These)

Emissions & Range:

  • Must produce 0g CO2/km at the tailpipe (fully electric only)
  • Minimum range of 100 miles (160km) on a single charge
  • Must be a new, unused vehicle (not pre-registered or used)

Classification:

  • Must be an M1 passenger vehicle (standard cars, not commercial)
  • Not a plug-in hybrid (PHEV)—only pure battery electric vehicles (BEV)

Warranty Requirements:

  • 3-year or 60,000-mile vehicle warranty minimum (whichever comes first)
  • 8-year or 100,000-mile battery warranty minimum (whichever comes first)

Price Cap:

  • Recommended retail price (RRP) under £37,000 including VAT and delivery
  • Some exceptions: vehicles sharing technical approval with qualifying models

Sustainability Criteria (Determines Grant Amount)

Band 1 (£3,750 Grant) - Highest Tier:

  • Manufacturer has committed to a Science-Based Target (SBT) for emissions reduction
  • Must show demonstrated progress toward these targets across entire operations
  • Only 8 current models qualify (Renault, Ford, Nissan, MINI, Alpine, Citroën models)

Band 2 (£1,500 Grant) - Standard Tier:

  • Meets basic environmental standards set by government
  • 40+ current models qualify (Volkswagen, Vauxhall, Peugeot, Skoda, Toyota, and more)

Why the Two-Tier System?

The government wants to reward manufacturers making serious sustainability commitments, not just those building EVs. Science-Based Targets mean:

  • Measurable CO2 reduction goals across manufacturing, supply chain, and operations
  • Independent verification of progress
  • Alignment with Paris Agreement climate goals

Bottom line: If a new electric car is listed as eligible on the government website and costs under £37,000, it qualifies. At Motor Source, we only show you eligible vehicles—no confusion, no surprises.

Your Questions Answered: New Electric Car Buying Guide

"How do I claim the grant at Motor Source?"

You don't need to do anything.

When you view any eligible electric car on Motor Source, the price displayed already includes the government grant deduction. When you order the car, we handle all the grant paperwork with the government on your behalf. You simply pay the discounted price and drive away.

"Are all electric cars on Motor Source eligible for grants?"

We only sell brand new electric vehicles, and we clearly label each car with its grant status. Every vehicle listing shows the original list price, grant amount deducted, and your final price after grant. No confusion, no surprises.

"Can I combine Motor Source deals with the government grant?"

Yes! The government grant is just the starting point. At Motor Source, we combine the grant with our exclusive new car discounts for eligible customer groups, giving you maximum savings. When you enquire about a specific model, we'll tell you every available discount.

"I don't have a driveway. Should I still buy an electric car?"

Yes, with the right charging strategy. Many customers successfully use workplace charging, on-street residential chargers, or public charging networks. Our EV specialists can help you plan your charging before you buy.

"Should I wait for prices to drop further?"

Unlikely to see significant drops. Battery costs have plateaued, and waiting means missing the £3,750 immediate saving. The grant availability is time-limited and the fund could deplete early. If you need a new car now, buying electric now makes financial sense.

"What about the new road tax on EVs from 2025?"

From April 2025 onwards, EVs pay standard rate (~£190/year from year 2). Most grant-eligible cars cost under £40,000, so you won't pay the expensive car supplement. Even with road tax, EVs still save £1,600+/year on fuel and maintenance.

"Can I get help with home charging installation?"

Yes—Motor Source can connect you with OZEV-approved installers to help you claim the £350 home charger grant where eligible. The installer will coordinate your site survey and installation.

"Can I test drive the vehicles?"

Yes! Please arrange a test drive directly with your local franchise dealership. Our team can provide you with dealership contact details for the vehicles you're interested in.

"What happens if the grant runs out before I take delivery?"

You're protected once you order. When you order your new EV from Motor Source, we submit your grant application to the government and your grant is reserved for your specific order. Even if the fund depletes later, your grant is guaranteed.

"How does finance work with the grant?"

The grant is applied BEFORE we calculate your finance. This means you finance the lower, grant-inclusive price, resulting in lower monthly payments from day one. We show you the grant-inclusive monthly payment upfront—no surprises.
