What Happens After You Enquire?
Not every NHS employee wants to lease, and that's completely fine. For NHS staff who'd rather own their vehicle outright, we also provide access to NHS car discounts on brand new purchases.
Common questions from NHS staff about car leasing, eligibility, costs and how it compares to salary sacrifice.
For most NHS staff, car leasing is worth it — particularly if you want a brand new, reliable vehicle without a large upfront purchase cost and without touching your NHS pension. Leasing gives you fixed monthly payments, manufacturer warranty, road tax included, and no depreciation risk. It works best when you want a new car every 2–4 years, want to protect your NHS pension (it is not salary sacrifice), and prefer predictable monthly costs over ownership. Buying vs Leasing vs Salary Sacrifice for NHS Staff.
NHS car leasing through Motor Source Leasing is a personal contract hire (PCH) arrangement. You pay a fixed monthly amount to use a brand new vehicle for an agreed term — typically 24 to 48 months. Road tax and manufacturer warranty are included. At the end of the term you return the vehicle. This is not salary sacrifice — your NHS pension is completely unaffected.
Any member of staff employed by the NHS in the UK is eligible — including nurses, midwives, doctors, paramedics, physiotherapists, administrative staff, and all other NHS roles. There is no minimum band requirement, no salary threshold, and no restriction by trust. If you are on an NHS payroll, you qualify.
Yes — midwives are fully eligible for NHS car leasing. As NHS-employed clinical staff, midwives qualify in exactly the same way as nurses, doctors, or any other NHS employee. There is no restriction based on role, band, or the trust you work for. Any midwife on an NHS payroll can access NHS lease deals through Motor Source Leasing.
Monthly costs vary depending on the vehicle, lease term, mileage allowance, and initial rental. Road tax is included as standard. Smaller models carry lower monthly rates; premium or larger vehicles are higher. Key cost factors: vehicle model and trim, lease term length (24–48 months), annual mileage allowance, initial rental amount, and whether an optional maintenance package is added.
Your mileage allowance is agreed at the start of your lease as an annual figure. Common options include 8,000, 10,000, 12,000 and 15,000 miles per year. A lower allowance reduces your monthly payment but exceeding it incurs per-mile excess charges. For NHS staff covering community visits or multiple sites, we recommend factoring in work mileage as well as personal driving when setting the allowance.
No — insurance is not included as standard. You are required to arrange your own fully comprehensive motor insurance throughout the lease term. What is included as standard: road tax (VED) for the full lease term, and manufacturer warranty. Optional maintenance packages can add servicing and tyre cover but not insurance.
Standard personal contract hire (PCH) leases do not include a purchase option. At the end of the lease term the vehicle is returned to the funder. This protects you from depreciation risk. If owning the car at the end matters to you, a new car purchase through Motor Source on PCP or HP may be more suitable. Buying vs Leasing vs Salary Sacrifice for NHS Staff.
NHS car leasing makes most sense when your current car is ageing or repair costs are rising; you're starting a new NHS role and want predictable transport costs from day one; you want to protect your NHS pension without salary sacrifice; you want to try an electric vehicle without the commitment of buying; you need a car quickly from in-stock availability; or you need short-term flexibility on a fixed-term NHS contract.
